The Power of Thankfulness

Have you ever noticed how people who seem to have everything in life always seem to be ungrateful. They are never satisfied with what they have got and want more, always complaining about things. Yet on the other hand those who seem to have been treated badly by Life such as those who have a life debilitating illness or a disability are thankful for what they HAVE got. They appreciate the small things in life that we all too often take for granted. They are thankFULL for each day and what it may bring.

One of the sayings that my father used to say to me before he passed away was “Count your blessings”. That is something that I try to do each day - be thankful for what I HAVE got and realise that I have so many things to be thankful for. One of the things that I am thankful is my life! That is because in 2015 I suffered a stroke which kept me in hospital for ten days. I was lucky because thanks to the person on the 111 phone line an ambulance came round within ten minutes and I was in hospital within half on hour of it happening. At first I couldn’t walk, but little by little I was able to make progress each day and with the help of the doctors, nurses and physiotherapists I was able to be discharged. I have recovered mostly from it, but one thing that did affect me was on my right side I have lost the feeling of hot and cold so hot water feels just warm to me. However that is only a minor thing and I when I think how it might have been I don’t worry about that small loss of function in my body.

Through this major life changing experience I have learnt to be appreciative of each thing in my life. In fact I have written a book about it called “The Power of Thankfulness”. It’s not just about me, but more about the positive effects of using Thankfulness, (or Gratitude if you like). In it I discuss the benefits of this and how Science has been backing up these claims. There’s also some exercise of meditations that you can do for yourself and guidance on how to record your Thankfulness experiences.
If you live in the Southend area I will be giving a talk on the book, with a question and answer time, and a book signing session afterwards. It’s free by the way.

Here are the details. Talk on the power of Thankfulness at The Quaker Meeting Hall, Dundonald Drive, Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, SS91NB
