City of Ten Thousand Buddhas open for tour

The City of Ten Thousand Buddhas (CTTB), the largest Buddhist monastery in the Americas, will be open to the public on May 31st for the 30th anniversary of the founder’s nirvana. Events at this Ukiah site, include a tour of the monastery, introduction to meditation, and mantra recitation for world peace. Located at the site of the former Mendicino State Hospital, CTTB was founded as a center for Buddhism by Tripitika Master Hsuan Hua in 1976. The nearly 500 acre campus is not only home to Tathagata Monastery, but also to an elementary school, a boys’ secondary school, a girls’ secondary school and the Dharma Realm Buddhist University. The on-site, popular vegan restaurant Jyun Kang is blue zone project certified. Tripitika Master Hsuan Hua (1918 – 1995), is the founder of Dharma Realm Buddhist Association (DRBA), which has 28 monasteries in North America, Australia and Asia. Born in Heilongjiang Province, China, he became a monk at 19. He taught at Nan Hua Monastery in Guangdong, China, the bodhimanda of the Sixth Patriarch. After spending more than a decade in Hong Kong, he came to the United States at the request of disciples, establishing Gold Mountain Monastery in San Francisco.
