What If? Screening and Discussion with Manaf Halbouni

Sat 29 July 2017 14:30 – 18:30 BST Free Event The Sykes-Picot Agreement, 1916, involved the drawing of borderlines in the Middle East by French and British diplomats. Consequences of the deal are felt heavily a century later, but what if there was a different history? Manaf Halbouni is working with Deveron Projects in Huntly to create an alternative timeline, fictionalising a world where the Ottoman Empire and United States of Arabia split Europe instead. Join us for screening of What If?, Manaf’s play created with resettled Syrian refugees and Huntly residents, showing a meeting between two representatives planning the split. Followed by a discussion questioning and clarifying our rarely challenged history regarding continuous threat from terrorism, increased Islamophobia, and conflict in the Middle East. Speakers include; artist Manaf Halbouni; Professor Paul Starkey, ice-President of the British Society for Middle Eastern Studies; and Dr Janet Starkey, who has written much on the subject of Scotland and Syria. 2.30-5.30 pm Manaf Halbouni: Artist Talk What If? Film screening Discussion: Understanding the Middle East 5.30-6.30 pm Reception hosted by German Consulate of Scotland
