Replacing unloving thoughts with loving ones

By: Raveena Nash

There is a tendency to blame the ego for all the negative thoughts in our minds. But is this wise? I asked for Guidance on this matter and I received the following:

‘When you have a negative thought don’t say to yourself, “Oh, that’s the ego, go away ego!” This will just make the ego real to you. By acknowledging the ego in your mind you are giving it the reality that it wants, and of course it won’t just go away. Instead, when you catch yourself blaming, criticising, comparing or judging others just say to yourself, “I choose to do that no longer.” You can’t deny the ego because you believe it exists, but don’t dwell on it and don’t blame it. Simply choose love whenever you catch yourself being unloving.’

I turned to A Course in Miracles to see what Jesus had to say about the ego. He says a great deal about it but I found the following particularly relevant: “The full awareness of the Atonement, then, is the recognition that the separation never occurred. The ego cannot prevail against this because it is an explicit statement that the ego never occurred.” T98.

So, if the ego never occurred because the separation from God never occurred, we really shouldn’t waste much time thinking about it or blaming it or fighting against it or trying to overcome it. We simply replace unloving thoughts in our mind with loving ones. And if we find that difficult to do, we call upon our Higher Self or the Holy Spirit or Jesus or another Spirit Guide to help us with this.
