Meditation / Mindfulness

Welcome to Longchen, an international community of Buddhist students and teachers practising meditation in the Mahayana Maha Ati (Dzogchen) tradition of Buddhism. The community, or mandala, is under the spiritual direction of lineage holder Rigdzin Shikpo.

Rigdzin Shikpo has been charged by his root teacher, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche with revealing the essence of these Tibetan teachings, which encompass the Hinayana, Mahayana and Secret Mantra Vajrayana vehicles, in a way suitable for those of us born and brought up in the West.

Longchen Buddhadharma is suitable for all ages and levels of experience. It has two qualities. It is rare because it offers a complete path of training for householder yogins. It is precious in that it is difficult to find someone from our culture who has received these teachings and is authorised to transmit them in their entirety.

The path of training, which is also the goal, is the Indestructible Heart Essence. At its heart lies the Longchen Nyinthig (Heart Drops of the Great Space) cycle of teachings. Entry points include Path of Freedom events, The Lion's Roar and Heart of Buddha teachings. Some happen at local and national group events as well as in retreat environments. If you're not sure where to start, then why not try the clips below or visit our meditation or teachings pages.

Meditation is the means of connecting more fully with the world of our own experience. It is a path of complete openness of heart and mind, through which we come to realise the indestructible heart essence that is our true nature. This benefits both ourselves and others.

We put a lot of emphasis on the practice of formless meditation and developing the view of openness. Once or twice a year we run short courses (4-5 weeks duration) focussing on the main elements of formless meditation. At other times topics from the Path of Freedom course are presented.

We meet weekly to practise meditation together and to deepen our understanding of Buddhist teachings. The group is currently led by Caroline Seymour, one of Longchen's authorised teachers. Each session starts with meditation, followed by a talk and discussion along the lines of:

7.00pm arrival
7.15pm Formless meditation (30-45minutes)
8pm Dharma talk
8.30pm Questions and discussion

The class follows a term-based structure, roughly equivalent to the usual school term dates, but with occasional breaks for Bank Holidays and retreats. Please phone or email before coming for the first time to confirm that we are meeting.

We welcome complete beginners as well as more experienced students.
