The Gate of the Year - 2019

“I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year, Give me a light that I may travel safely into the unknown.” These lines are from a poem by Minnie Louise Haskins and the poem became famous after it was quoted by the late King George V1 in his 1939 Christmas message to the nation

A new year is like a notebook of blank pages waiting to be written upon. As we look forward we also tend to look back to the year that has gone. Do we have happy memories or are we glad to see the back of it? Could we have done better? Can we see where we went wrong? Did we pass up an opportunity or let a friend down? What lessons can we learn from the past 12 months? As Spiritualists we must remember that our earth life is a school of learning. Everyone of our years is like a year in school and each new year is a chance for us to do better in the exams of life. Let us determine to fill the empty pages of our journal with good things and not blot our copybook.

I like the traditional custom of making new year resolutions. I think we all need aims in life so let's give ourselves some goals to work towards in the new year remembering always that it is God's approval we are striving for. The road through life is strewn with obstacles and boulders and it is how we face these challenges and setbacks that goes towards our soul's growth. It does not matter if you fall down or lose the way because God still loves you and is watching over you. What you have to do in the words of the old song is “Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and start all over again.”

A new year gives us all a new beginning, new chances and the determination to do better. For the younger generation a new year is joyfully welcomed as they reach out for changes and new experiences. The older generation however looks at the new year with trepidation as they wonder what it holds for them. Will they have health problems? Perhaps see the passing of dear friends and relatives? It takes courage for many to face a new year of life. This is where the next lines of Mrs Haskins's poem become so relevant. “Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God. That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.”

For myself, whenever I hear the bells ringing out welcoming in the new year I always send a prayer to God asking Him to accompany me into the new year and be with me whatever the year may hold.
