How to Have Difficult Conversations About Race Without Losing Your Cool

Dr. Amanda Kemp, a racial justice and mindfulness mentor, will present a public talk entitled "How to Have Difficult Conversations About Race Without Losing Your Cool or Your Voice" on Thursday, November 15 at 7:00 p.m. at First Parish in Concord, 20 Lexington Rd. A dessert reception will follow. Dr. Kemp is an African American poet and author. She will share her perspective on how to have fruitful conversations about race. The event will appeal to residents of largely white suburban communities interested in thoughtful, reflective dialogue about racial equity. Born in Mississippi and raised in the New York City foster care system, Dr. Kemp has worked for racial justice and authentic community since her first anti-apartheid march in 1983. She studied African and African-American history at Stanford and graduated from Northwestern University with a PhD in performance studies. She is the author of Say the Wrong Thing: Stories and Strategies for Racial Justice. Known for her TedX talk and Facebook videos, Dr. Kemp conducts online and in-person classes using her educational framework, Racial Justice from the H.E.A.R.T. The event is sponsored by First Parish in Concord (Unitarian Universalist), its Racial Justice Action Group and Women's Parish Association, and The Robbins House, Concord's African American History Museum. A Q and A session will conclude the talk, which will be followed by a dessert reception. Freewill donations will be accepted for Dr. Kemp's honorarium.
