The Science Behind Mindfulness

Mindfulness: a supercharged awareness fully directed to the present moment in a non-reactive and non-judgemental way. It orients our mind to what is important to us in this moment of our life. Dr Tamara Russell is a neuroscientist, psychologist, martial artist and mindfulness teacher. She believes that it is possible for everyone to find a way to weave mindfulness into their daily lives. Dr Russell is passionate about the brain and this evening she will share the exciting neuroscientific research that is helping us to understand why mindfulness really can ‘work’, along with its future possibilities and applications. We will look into the brain to learn about the processes that are engaged when practising mindfulness, what the brain is doing, how the brain pays attention and consider 'where am I when my mind wanders'? We all need clear and calm thinking to meet the challenges our world is facing. Mindfulness is one route to ensuring that we proceed with this consideration and clarity rather than with knee-jerk reactions. In a mindful world there is room for us all to thrive. Tamara Russell works as an academic, clinician and consultant, teaching mindfulness groups and individuals in the public and private sectors. Her clients include NHS trusts, professional athletes, businesses, artists, lawyers, journalists, parents and students. Her creative and playful approach helps anyone begin to access a different and more skilful way of engaging with experience and life’s challenges and joys. Tamara’s book on mindfulness is available: What is Mindfulness?

College of Psychic Studies
HOST:
College of Psychic Studies - The College was founded in 1884 by a group of eminent scholars and scientists. Its purpose was to facilitate formal investigation into the psychic and mediumistic phenomena that were such a topic of debate in the Victorian era. With great courage, this group of distinguished people, some notable in science, others from within the ranks of the Anglican clergy, defied the prevailing canons of respectability in order to proclaim to a world of increasing materialism that human personality survives bodily death and that this is capable of demonstration.
