Altered States of Consciousness and Exceptional Human Experiences

Dr David Luke is a psychologist working in the field of Parapsychology. His main interests are in altered states of consciousness and exceptional experiences such as psi (extrasensory perception) especially those experiences occurring during meditation, dreams and following the ingestion of psychedelic substances. David has conducted some of the largest scale dream ESP Studies. He is also interested in cross-cultural approaches to altered states of consciousness and what we can learn from indigenous cultures, and is conducting field research investigations with shamans. This evening David will talk to us about his work especially his extensive dream ESP studies and his work with South American shamans who use psychoactive plants and fungi for spiritual and shamanic rituals. What is happening in the brain during these experiences and what can be learned from his dream ESP studies and from traditional shamanic practices using these substances? Does it give us an insight into what is taking place in the brain when practising mediumship? Dr David Luke is Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Greenwich where he teaches the Psychology of Exceptional Human Experience and is a guest lecturer at the University of Northampton, for the MSc in Transpersonal Psychology and Consciousness Studies. He was President of the Parapsychological Association between 2009-2011 and has published more than 100 academic papers and five books covering anomalous phenomena and altered states of consciousness, especially via psychedelics. He directs the Ecology, Cosmos and Consciousness salon at the Institute of Ecotechnics, and co-founded and co-directs Breaking Convention, a multidisciplinary conference on psychedelic consciousness.

College of Psychic Studies
HOST:
College of Psychic Studies - The College was founded in 1884 by a group of eminent scholars and scientists. Its purpose was to facilitate formal investigation into the psychic and mediumistic phenomena that were such a topic of debate in the Victorian era. With great courage, this group of distinguished people, some notable in science, others from within the ranks of the Anglican clergy, defied the prevailing canons of respectability in order to proclaim to a world of increasing materialism that human personality survives bodily death and that this is capable of demonstration.
